Australian Open Melbourne 2022

January 2020: Dominic already played there in 2020 and unfortunately lost the 1/4 final at the Junior AO.

January 2022: With his ranking, ATP 246, Dominic, as one of the youngest players (19 years) ever, was allowed to play the qualifier for the Australia Open.  After the preparation tournament in Traralgon, it was off to Melbourne. With temperatures of up to 40 degrees, Dominic trained and played on the hot hard courts. In the first round of the qualifying Dominic played against Mohamed Safwat. After losing the first set, Dominic was able to reduce his nervousness and play more relaxed and self-confident. With 3:6 / 6:2 / 6:1 he won his first match at a Grand Slam tournament. In the second round Matthew Ebden was on the other side. A very experienced player (best ranking ATP 39) and already Grand Slam winner at the AO in mixed. It was a battle at eye level. Great points and rallies and they gave each other nothing. Unfortunately with the better end in the first set in the tie-break for Ebden. Also in the second set it was even but the Australian made no mistakes and served almost only 1 service. What was finally enough for him to win the match 7:6 / 6:2. Still a great match ☺ and a great experience for Dominic’s backpack.
