3 wins against ATP Top 100 players in Stockholm and Basel
Dominic played ATP 250 in Stockholm in October and then ATP 500 at his home tournament in Basel.
Now it showed what he, Didi and his whole team have been working on over the last few months. His body and head were ready. In Stockholm, Dominic won the first round against ATP 90, A. Kovacevic, 6:4 / 5:7 / 6:4, followed by a cracker of a match. None other than Matteo Berrettini, ATP no. 35, winner of Gstaad and Kitzbühel 2024 among others, was on the other side. A huge match, with incredible rallies in a breathtaking atmosphere. Pure atmosphere and thrills. The first set went into a tie-break and Berrettini was leading 5:2, with Berrettini still serving twice. Anyone who knows Berrettini and his style of play knows that he serves like a demigod. But Dominic was strong and with 2 mini-breaks to 5:4 and his own serve. But a nice point from Berrettini. So 2 set points for the Italian. But Dominic was untouched and won a point and another mini-break. And finally, after 4 points in a row, Dominic closed out the set with a hammer service winner. The second set was again neck and neck and hard-fought. However, both were very strong in their service. At 5:4, Dominic got the break he needed and the win was perfect. Pure joy and what a performance. In the ¼ final, G. Dimitrov, ATP no. 10, and Dominic again played sensationally. However, the determination and cold-bloodedness in the decisive points spoke in favor of the top ten player and Dominic lost 3:6 / 2:6.
Everyone was now looking forward to the Swiss Indoors in Basel, ATP 500.
When you looked at the field of participants in Basel, you couldn’t help but be amazed. You had to have an ATP 45 ranking to even be included in the main draw. Dominic received a wildcard from the tournament, which secured him a place in the main draw.
T. Griekspoor, ATP no. 35, was a tough opponent. He had played his way into the semi-finals in Stockholm the week before. There he lost to the winner of the Dominic, G. Dimitrov, narrowly in the third set. Among others, he defeated C. Ruud (ATP no. 8) in the ¼ final.
What a match in front of a large audience and many Stricker fans in the large hall in Basel.
Dominic started concentrated and focused right from the start. With the cheering crowd cheering him on, he earned a break point at 1:0. Which he then made. Thanks to Dominic’s strong performance (he didn’t have to concede a break point), he then won the first set 6:4. The second set was then much more competitive. Dominic had a break point at 2:2 and 3:3. But he couldn’t make it. However, at 4:4 he really succeeded.
5:4, another game. But the last one is always the hardest. And it was the same here. 2 simple errors and a double fault and it was 15:40. 2 break points for Griekspoor. This was followed by a moderate stop ball from Dominic. With the subsequent easy volley, the re-break would have been a fact for Griekspoor. But he managed to play the ball into the net. So lucky for him and the hall breathed a sigh of relief. This was followed by service winners from Dominic and soon it was done. 6:4 second set and so: GAME – SET – WIN – STRICKER.
Once again, Dominic wrote a beautiful story in Basel.
In the second round, Dominic had to play Holger Rune ATP no. 11. And it was another exciting match. One break was enough for Rune to take the first set 3:6. Exactly the opposite in the second set. Dominic with the break and 5:4 and the opportunity to take the set. However, it is clear to see that Rune had a very lucky hand and hit the edge of the net or the line by millimeters, while Dominic missed exactly those millimeters. This led to a re-break and the tennis gods were not on Dominic’s side in the tie-break.
Nevertheless, it was a great match against one of the best in the world and makes you want more.

A first for Dominic. Never before had he played in a doubles semi-final at an ATP 500 tournament:

In the doubles, “Mäc” Hüsler and Dominic played their way from round to round and knocked the No. 4 seeds out of the tournament, among others. Fils and Shelton were also beaten by the Swiss. In the ½ final, however, they were unfortunately defeated by the tournament’s No. 1 seed. Our boys narrowly lost it in the third set with 6:10.
